Multifunctional building in Wrocław
Multifunctional building in Wroclaw, organizing the internal space of the Wroclaw University campus. Flexible and easily accessible research laboratories. Students center transforming into a two-level recreational area. Over 210 well-lit and ergonomic rooms in the hotel part of the I stage building.
30,000 m² of the I and II stage building, provides space for modern laboratories and more than 420 rooms for assistants, doctoral students and students. A new quality, enriching the campus, is a two-level green area, located between the planned buildings. A place free of vehicular traffic. It offers excellent conditions for recreation, work and learning in the open air. From the front side of the I stage building, it is planned to expand the inner street of the campus, in the form of a multi-purpose entrance square. A two-storey internal space connects the square and a two-level green area into an integrated interior-exterior layout. Separating the zone of cargo delivery and entry to the underground car park is the key to ensuring acoustic comfort for the residents of the facility.
The building's base allows to organize flexible laboratory surfaces. The size of the layout, location on the ground floor, above-standard strength of the structure and dismountable wall fragments, allow to insert the devices with non-standard sizes. The laboratory program is complemented by research workers' offices and meeting rooms, located next to the research rooms. The conference room on the first floor is a place for exchanging ideas. The interaction area expands the multifunctional space in front of the room, opening to the outside terrace. The canteen and the two-level student zone, closes it from the front of the building. On the six floors above, there are more than 210 single and double rooms of different sizes. Separate inputs ensure collision-free access to each function. Excessive installation shakes were carried out through the building. Together with a large installation terrace on the roof, they create the possibility of flexible modification of the installation, serving the space of research laboratories on the ground floor.
The designed block dynamically shapes the space around the area. It is divided in accordance with the functional system, as agreed, providing optimal cubic volume for each function. The division also concerns the method of elaboration of the elevation. The lower part is homogeneous and smooth. The upper part has far more diverse tectonics. The effective shadow, generated by the modular solution of the eastern and western façades, protects the room from overheating. The building was equipped with solar collectors and photovoltaic cells, responsible for the production of hot water for the hotel's part and electricity for laboratories. Installation of heat recovery from used water, supports the production of water for showers. Rainwater is collected in retention reservoirs and used for flushing toilets and watering green areas. The BMS system optimizes the use of external media and integrates the operation of installations with resources generated by the facility.
